President Biden lauded his Nigerian counterpart for his efforts to further democracy in Africa in a statement released on Thursday and signed by the presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu. According to the US President, the meeting with the selected African leaders was held to exchange information with the US about the upcoming elections and discuss methods to strengthen democracy in Africa.
In addition, Biden said that the gathering was intended to inspire the nations to push ahead with their democratic processes rather than to stop short of doing so.
When Buhari was an opposition leader before being elected president, he stated he followed his career path, and he added that it is encouraging. “very heartening” that he is not running for re-election.
Therefore, Biden urged Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain their apolitical nature, noting that he was pleased to see Nigeria serve as an example of democracy in Africa.
The US President also said that he recognizes the difficulties that African nations face and pledged that the US is ready to assist them wherever it may be needed.
In response, Buhari thanked the US president for his encouraging words and congratulated him on reaching the pinnacle of his political career.
He also wished him well in all of his endeavors and praised him for organizing the meeting with African leaders.
