According to the Federal Government, the Reuter's story alleging that the Nigerian military carried out a covert mass abortion operation during the fight against Boko Haram is false information intended to mislead and divert the combat forces.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, gave a speech on behalf of the administration on Monday in Abuja at the 10th annual (PMB) Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023).
He said that the news agency, which solely used anonymous sources and the supposed inspection of fictitious "documents," made the serious charge without providing any supporting proof.
“The agency claimed that its investigation was based on interviews with 33 women and girls.
“How do they use interviews with 33 women and girls to arrive at the bogus claim of 10,000 abortions?
“And in a further indication that the figure of abortions quoted was arbitrary or possibly conjured, the agency first put the figure at 12,000 before settling for 10,000,” he said.
Mohammed reaffirmed the federal government's view that the military was not engaged in a "secret, organized, or unlawful abortion operation" in any place or anyplace else in the nation.
He also questioned the legitimacy of the alleged inquiry at a time when the military was claiming victories in eliminating terrorists and freeing kidnapped people.
