Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has explained how, if elected in 2023, he will put an end to the Biafra struggle by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In the Southeast, Atiku promised to engage in negotiations with IPOB and other pro-Biafra agitators.
Atiku stated he would utilize restructuring to appease the part of the IPOB and Biafra agitators during a Townhall meeting.
According to the former vice president, the Southeast requires more liberty.
“The IPOB issue in the South-East is basically, as far as my understanding is concerned, about the realisation of Biafra. Is it possible for Biafra to be realised today?
“How? By negotiations or by going through another civil war, which we can’t afford to?
“I believe we should be able to negotiate with the agitators from the South-East, as far as the issue of Biafra is concerned.
“That is why we proposed restructuring of the country, by which we mean devolution of more powers and resources,” he said.
Recently, IPOB has been leading the movement for the reunification of Biafra under the direction of Nnamdi Kanu.
Due to the group's upheaval, Kanu was detained and is currently being tried in a Nigerian court.
Attempts to free the Biafra agitator have been rejected by the Nigerian government, notwithstanding a decision by an Abuja Appeal Court.
