One year in jail and a N500,000 fine awaits vote buyers, says INEC

 

Anyone found guilty of purchasing votes during the elections in 2023 would face a year in prison or a fine of N500,000, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.

This was said in an interview with newsmen by Professor Muhammad Lawal Bashar, the INEC Commissioner for Jigawa State.

The Commissioner stated that in order to ensure free and fair elections, the electoral commission is ready to conduct all of the polls using the BVAS system.

Those who have registered more than once will not be allowed to vote, according to the system that will recognize voters coming to the polls.

According to Professor Muhammad, the Commission has received over 156 permanent voter cards, which will continue to be distributed until January 22, 2023.

He urged people who had signed up but had not yet picked up their voter cards to do so before the deadline.

The Commissioner continued by saying that the organization came up with a smart approach that will make voting simple for those who have special needs, the elderly, and expectant mothers.
