In the heart of Bauchi, amidst swirling controversies and accusations, Chief Imam Idris Abdul’aziz, known for his controversial stance, emerged from self-imposed exile to refute allegations of threatening the life of Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. Addressing a gathering during the closing ceremony of this year's Ramadan commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Abdul’aziz vehemently denied any involvement in the purported threat against Mrs. Tinubu's life.
"I have no business with her whatsoever and I don’t even know her correct name," asserted Abdul’aziz, his voice resonating with conviction. "I have never commented on her husband, the president, let alone her. I don’t have anything to do with the wife of the president. It was a smearing campaign orchestrated from Bauchi to cause disaffection between me and the wife of the president."
With clarity in his words, Abdul’aziz dismantled the accusations, labeling them as baseless attempts to tarnish his reputation. "I challenge those behind this to bring forward authentic video or audio evidence where I was quoted issuing a threat to the wife of the president," he urged, his tone unwavering.
The allegations against Abdul’aziz stemmed from a viral video that surfaced in February, where the cleric was purportedly heard declaring that Nigeria’s First Lady deserved to die for her Christian faith. Additionally, he was accused of disparaging remarks regarding the Muslim-Muslim ticket that propelled President Bola Tinubu to power.
However, undeterred by the alleged threat, Mrs. Tinubu, during her visit to Bauchi to commission projects in March, expressed her resilience in the face of adversity. "After reaching 64 years of age, I shouldn’t be afraid of death," she remarked, embodying strength and resolve.
In response to the incident, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi expressed his dismay, condemning the threat as unacceptable. "I apologize to Mrs. Tinubu for any distress caused and assure her of her safety in the state," pledged Governor Mohammed, reaffirming the commitment to uphold peace and security.
